Miss Emma Scott (1857-1932)
Miss Scott was a much-loved headmistress at Plymouth College for Girls on Lockyer Streetk, for a quarter of a century. She was also, in her own right, a noted amateur scientist and naturalist. She was elected as President of the Athenaeum for 1917-1918, the first woman in that office – giving her presidential speech on women and their work in the world. After standing down as headmistress in 1925, she remained an active figure in local education, serving on the Plymouth Education Committee, as well as being a governor for a number of other local schools.
