Dorothy F. Walrond Innes (1905-1981)

Alderman Dorothy F. W. Innes was the second female Lord Mayor of Plymouth, elected in 1971. A State Registered Nurse (SRN), she had served with the Civil Nursing Reserve during WW2, acting as organiser for the civil nursing staff of the Plymouth area hospitals. She was the widow of Laurence Walrond Innes, a noted and respected general surgeon in Plymouth, and a long-standing political activist in her own right. Conservative Councillor for the Compton ward for the first time in 1950, she consistently gained large majorities as a measure of her local popularity.
